Safe Steps, a volunteer home-repair program coordinated by the Cressvale Housing Coalition, has reopened its referral waitlist after completing the oldest projects carried over from last year.
The program handles small repairs tied to basic safety and access, including loose handrails, minor step repairs, simple weather sealing, and replacement smoke-alarm mounts. It does not perform roof replacement, electrical-panel work, major plumbing, or emergency construction.
Program coordinator Lila Stone said the waitlist closed in October when pending work exceeded the number of trained crews expected through winter. Eight projects were completed during two cold-weather workdays, and three were referred to licensed contractors because they exceeded the volunteer program’s scope.
Reopening the list does not guarantee that a project will be accepted. Staff first review the repair, household circumstances, ownership or landlord permission, material needs, and whether trained volunteers can complete the work safely.
Priority is given to hazards affecting entry, mobility, and weather exposure. The program does not publish a first-come, first-served promise because a simple handrail may be scheduled before an earlier request that requires a contractor or unavailable materials.
The coalition said residents should use the current referral information available through its usual service partners. This article does not reproduce personal contact channels or collect requests.
Update, May 14: Safe Steps has paused new referrals again after reaching its spring capacity. Previously accepted projects remain under review or scheduled. The coalition expects to publish another capacity update after its June work weekend.
