Redfern neighbors have closed a $6,400 gap in the fund to replace the roof on the hamlet’s former grange hall, the volunteer hall committee announced Friday.
A spring supper and quilt raffle raised $4,150 after expenses. An anonymous donor then offered to match contributions received during the final week, bringing the project slightly above its $31,000 target.
The one-story hall has been used for community meals, orchard meetings, memorial gatherings, and winter supply collections. Volunteers have managed minor leaks with patches and buckets, but the committee said the current roof has reached the point where another repair would not be economical.
Work is expected to begin after the July holiday weekend and take four to six days in dry weather. The hall will close during removal and installation. The contractor will replace damaged sheathing only where needed, so the final cost may change after the old roofing is removed.
Committee treasurer Jo Senn said any money remaining after invoices are paid will stay in the building reserve rather than support a new project. A final income-and-expense summary will be posted on the hall bulletin board.
The building sits outside District 2. It is owned by the Redfern Hall Association, not the county, and the roof project does not use county funds.
